What is "phishing" ?

Phishing is a general term for schemes devised to deceive you into divulging personal or financial information to an outside party. These outside parties use "lures" that appear to be legitimate e-mails or web sites, but are faked in order to capture information such as your Social Security Number, credit card number, bank account numbers, and PINs.

Warnings

  • No reputable company, person or entity should ever ask for personal information especially via unsolicited emails.
  • No one is obligated to provide neither personal info nor financial info...the JCSU IT department will never do so.
  • Use common sense and trust your gut. If it doesn't seem right nor feel right then don't do it and if necessary report it.
  • Never click on a link, especially to a financial website.
  • If you are compelled to verify anything, then always open a new browser window and type the URL address in your browser's address bar.
