JCSU Announces New Curriculum and Instructional Facility on Trade Street

ground breaking.jpgJohnson C. Smith University officials made history today with the announcement of a new Visual and Performing Arts Curriculum and Instructional Facility for its students located just blocks away from the University on West Trade Street.

"We want Charlotte to take note that Johnson C. Smith University has deliberately stepped beyond its gates onto Trade Street, which is part of Center City." said Johnson C. Smith President Dr. Ronald L. Carter. "We are excited that Charlotte's 2020 Vision incorporates this area into Center City. We are moving ahead to make the 2020 vision a workable reality."

Renovations will be made to the 14,000 square feet facility and is slated for a Spring 2010 opening. The building, which was the original location for the Griffin Brothers Tire Company, was constructed in 1956. Since that time it has had four additions.

The creation of the center is in support of the University's new interdisciplinary B.A. in Visual and Performing Arts (VPA major). The new VPA major boasts concentrations in theatre, film, studio art, graphic art, and dance.

The renovated location will house the support facilities for all five arts concentrations. A black box theatre; art studios for drawing, painting, and clay sculpting; a Mac computer lab for graphics; a dark room for photography, and a dance studio will all be included in the designs. The will also be an area for video production.

JCSU plans for the VPA major program to reside in the renovated building for approximately five years, before moving into a permanent arts teaching facility.

This new center is part of JCSU's vision to revitalize Charlotte's Historic West End. The Wells Fargo Foundation announced a $500,000 gift to the United Negro College Fund to support Johnson C. Smith's vision for this corridor.
