Students Prepare Early for Academic Success
Ten JCSU students have gotten a jump start on their college careers through the Freshman Summer Scholars Program (FSSP). The four-week program is designed to assist students with making the transition from high school into college life. Participants are involved in an intensive academic curriculum which includes writing, mathematics, critical thinking and problem solving. "FSSP is a great way for students to get ahead of the pack academically while quickly becoming advanced freshmen, said Alexis Bibbs, Admissions Counselor/ FSSP Coordinator.
During the first week of the program, students were welcomed to JCSU by Dr. Ronald L. Carter during a dinner held in the Honors College. At that time, they shared their experiences leading up to attending JCSU. Dr. Carter also facilitated a discussion on the university's vision.
In addition to the academic piece, scholars participate in off-campus activities which help them develop their leadership, social and cultural enrichment skills necessary for the job market. Students toured the Levine Museum of the New South: they were accompanied by Sherrill Hampton, Director for Applied Leadership and Community Development. They also attended the play, METAMORPHOSES, at the Carolina Actors Studio Theatre (C.A.S.T.) in which they had to complete a reflection paper for their English class. Drs. Brian Johnson and Don Mager accompanied the students on this trip.
FSSP students who enter JCSU in the Fall will become a part of The Freshman Year Experience. This learning community is designed to enhance the overall academic performance of all JCSU students. Within The Freshman Experience, students are assisted in class scheduling, provided guidance for successful career planning, and helped to develop a sound financial plan for their continued enrollment at the University. Instructors for the FSSP include: Ms. Patsy Camp (English); Dr. Venton Bell (College Algebra) and Dr. Jemayne King (Orientation). During a recent visit with Dr. King's class, students stated that they viewed FSSP as a wonderful opportunity to get a real feel for college life and as an excellent opportunity to hone their study skills. For some, this is their first opportunity of being away from home for an extended period of time. Some of the scholars stated they were interested in pursuing majors in communications, political science, sports management, information technology, health science and business administration.
The 2009 Scholars are: Ieshia Miller, Jamal Rutledge, Emanuel Harris, Herbert Contee III, Jamil Ward, Regi Miner, Brett Pinnix, Ernest Cameron, Taylor Haselrig, Anthony Cureton.
Upon completing the program, students will have earned seven hours of course credit. The Freshman Summer Scholars Program concludes on July 11, 2009. This is the fifth year that the FSSP has been in existence.
