We all can take a lesson from the young scholars participating in the Carolina CDF Freedom Schools summer enrichment program. Students begin each day of the six-week, literacy-based camp with high energy singing and motivational cheers to get them going. Dr. Carter read to the class, Masai & I by Virginia Kroll. The book depicts a young African-American girl comparing the similarities and differences of her lifestyle to the Masai in East Africa. The elementary-age scholars also had the opportunity to hear Dr. Carter share some of his experiences of living in South Africa.
The Freedom Schools concept was developed through the Children's Defense Fund. The overall goal of the program is to encourage students to develop a love for reading through an award winning curriculum. The official kick off of the Carolina CDF Freedom Schools is Friday, July 10, 2009, starting at 12:00 p.m. in the Jack S. Brayboy Gymnasium. More than 900 participants are expected to take part in the Jubilee Celebration, Harambee, which means "all for one" in Swahili. This will mark the fourth year that the Jubilee has taken place.
