Graham Named CIAA Outdoor Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year

Graham is in his second season as head coach

Durham, NC - The Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association named head coach Lennox Graham as the 2009 Outdoor Women's Track and Field Coach of the Year on Tuesday afternoon at the annual conference spring meeting inside the Durham Marriott.

The Lady Golden Bulls finished third overall at the 2009 CIAA Outdoor Championships; just behind Bowie State University (2nd) and Saint Augustine's College (1st). Coach Graham (Kingston, Jamaica native) is only in his second season as Johnson C. Smith Head Track and Field Coach, both indoor and outdoor. Last year in Graham's first season, JCSU placed fifth in the conference championship. Graham has helped JCSU produce better performances this year with a young group of talent.

Sophomores Shermaine Williams and Nikki Boston and freshman Rosemarie Carty have all performed at an All-American level this indoor and outdoor season. Williams repeated as national indoor 60m hurdles champion and was named Women's Track Athlete of the Year in the Atlantic Region by the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.

At the CIAA Outdoor Championships, Boston placed first in the 400m hurdles (60.99), second in the javelin (36.46), and third in the 100m hurdles (14.08). Williams won the 100m hurdles (13.41) then returned to place third in the 200m (24.75). Carty placed third in both the 100m hurdles (13.97) and the 400m hurdles (62.56). Williams and Carty are #1 and #2 in the nation, respectively in the 100m hurdles; while Boston and Carty are #4 and #16 in the 400m hurdles, respectively.

"This is a great honor to be recognized for our team's efforts this year," said Graham. "I share this award with my assistant Larry Moore and my student-athletes, who have put forth a tremendous work ethic this season and continue striving to improve."

Graham brings 14 years of coaching experience at the junior and senior level, resulting in six national high school championship titles at Kingston College (High School) in Kingston, Jamaica. He has coached many individual champions at the local high school, Caribbean Free Trade Association (CARIFTA), Central American and Caribbean (CAC), North American - Central American and Caribbean (NACAC), Penn Relay, Pan American Junior Championships, and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) levels.

A 1984 graduate of Alabama State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration, Graham earned his master's degree in business administration from The University of New Orleans in 2006.
