Leford Green named Championship MVP
Petersburg, VA - The JCSU men's outdoor track and field team put forth some solid performances over two day-span at the 2009 CIAA Outdoor Championship held over the weekend at the Trojans Stadium on the campus of Virginia State University. Led by sophomore Championship MVP on the track, Leford Green, and sophomore thrower Julius Wright in the field; the Golden Bulls lifted their performances and positions in CIAA track and field.
Saint Augustine's College won the CIAA men's outdoor track and field title, scoring 229.75 points. Bowie State University was second, 76.50 points followed by Virginia State University 72.75 points. Johnson C. Smith University was fourth with 70.50 points, Virginia Union University in fifth (64.25 points), Livingstone College in sixth (23.50 points), Saint Paul's College seventh (18 points), and Shaw University finished in eighth place (13.75 points).
Green produced a season best 45.81, (2nd) in the 400m, 52.81, SB (1st) in the 400H and 21.23 (1st) in the 200m to lead all points earners on the track. Wright (53.51m) won the javelin in a new school record and returned to place eighth in the shot put (12.46) and 14th in the discuss (32.43).
In the field, freshman Cedric Simmons (1.98m) finished fourth in the high jump. The JCSU tradition in the men's javelin continued as Wright's victory was the fifth consecutive in the event for a Golden Bull thrower. Wright is coached by the 2005 and 2006 CIAA javelin Champion (JCSU volunteer coach, Larry Moore).
In the same event senior Ty Jordan (46.94m) finished third and defending champion senior Coleman McNeill (43.77m) was fifth with the best JCSU male performance in a single event at the championships. In the shot put McNeill (13.37m) was fourth and sophomore Marques Reese (10.08, PB) placed 17th.
On the track, freshman Richard Harkness (11.25), freshman Alberto DeCosta (11.31), senior Demetrius Hawkins (11.42) and sophomore Robert Evans (11.84) finished 11th, 14th, 15th, and 25th, respectively. Green won the 200m with Harkness in eighth and DeCosta in ninth. Sophomore John Rosemond (50.26) 11th faced the starter in the 400m where Green placed second.
Freshman Everette Berry (2:02.08) ended his first season with a personal best in the 800m. Sophomore Jonathan Jackson carried a huge workload for his team running the 800m, 1500m (4:27.80, PB) and 5000m. In the latter event, Jackson was able to secure sixth place in 18:22.50, PB.
Harkness (56.07) executed well in the 400m hurdles to achieve a PB in his final attempt at the event for the 2009 outdoor season. He also teamed with Green, Hawkins and DeCosta for second place in the 4x100m relay. Harkness was also a part of the quartet (Alberto DeCosta, John Rosemond and Leford Green) in the final track event of the meet to place second in the 4x400m relay.
The JCSU men improved their team position to fourth from fifth this year and were less than 10 points off the second ranked team, Bowie State University. The team now turns attention to the Penn Relays, April 23-25, 2009, where they will compete in the 4x100m, 4x400m and high jump.
