JCSU Track Star Leads in World Junior Hurdles

June 17, 2008 - JCSU track standout Shermaine Williams is now the World Junior leader in the 100m hurdles event, and is headed to Poland for the 2008 World Junior Championships. She won the event at the Jamaican National trials in 13.22 seconds, to beat the previous world best for 2008 set by Jacqueline Coward (13.26).

In a keen battle with pre-race favorite Natasha Ruddock (Essex Community College), Shermaine recovered from an uncharacteristically poor start to overhaul Natasha at hurdle six. A fierce battle ensued with Shermaine having the advantage when at the last hurdle Natasha fell in an unfortunate accident. Shermaine's time is a new personal record beating her previous best of 13.48 attained in Greensboro in May.

This is indeed a historic achievement with Shermaine becoming the first Golden Bull ever to qualify for the World Junior Championships.

The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) World Junior Championships will be held in Bydgoszcs, Poland on July 8-13, 2008.
