Position:                      DISPATCHER/SECURITY OFFICER (4 POSITIONS)

Department:                PUBLIC SAFETY

Responsibilities:          Responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for the university community. The Public Safety Department provides a 24-hour communication center staffed by Dispatcher/Security Officers (DSO's) The Dispatcher/Security Officer performs initial caller interrogation to determine the appropriate level of service needed in both a non-emergency and emergency situation and allocates appropriate personnel and resources to incidents and/or request for service; initiates fire, medical emergency, and non-emergency responses and response is provided by allied agencies. The dispatcher report to the Operations Lieutenant and will be under the lead direction of the Police Sergeant in the absence of the Lieutenant. May be assigned to other duties, including, but not limited to, the traffic entry control booth, residential hall CCTV and entry control booth, university property patrol, and responding to calls for service and performs other duties as required to meet organizational needs. 

 

Qualifications:             A high school diploma or equivalent and at least one year of verifiable experience using a switchboard or two-way radio communication system in a law enforcement or comparable agency within the last ten years.  A valid North Carolina Driver's License is also required. Current work experience in a public safety agency and/or higher education institution and DCI certificate preferred are preferred. Candidates must successfully pass a pre-employment written test related to essential dispatching skills, drug screen and a background investigation.  Must successfully complete the Dispatcher Course and test battery administered by the Police Officers Standards and Training Department within one year of employment. Candidates who have successfully completed the Public Safety Dispatcher's Basic Course or passed the Basic Dispatcher Training Equivalency Examination employment may be exempt from the course work requirements.

 

Physical Qualifications:          Must be physically able to operate a variety of machines and equipment including, automobile, radio, telephone, etc.  Must be able to exert up to ten pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.  Must be able to remain on feet for long periods of time, and able to defend one's self from attack or physical assault.
